We Propose

Many have expressed the importance of a public vote for a project  of this significance.  Given its location, proximity to a major street, providing public access and amenity and in honor of Smyrna's excellent history of smart growth, it seems an appropriate  and responsible approach.

Some have said that once the site is sold, this will prevent the expansion of the Community Center which is currently in need of additional space as it is well used both for public and private events.  The proposed Aquatic Center proposed for Ward 6 could easily be collocated with the Community Center at this site and could offer additional foot traffic given additional support spaces and retail.  "Right of first refusal" is virtually non-existent because the property would cost upwards of 10x the current selling price once developed.

Another location has been identified in an area more suitable to Smyrna at more than half the cost with 3 times as much space.  More information is comming soon.

Smyrna is in need of a Cultural Arts Center.  Imagine locating it in the center of our downtown.  Art strolls, culture and history walks and other types of activities could be planned to support this option.

This type of project would allow for additional visibility from Atlanta Road and would provide another opportunity to extend the Community Center programming.  It would also keep the essence of the green space alive if additional green and water features were added to the space. 

The City has done a wonderful job of planning programs and maximizing the use of open space.  Doing nothing is not an option as the openness of the area lends well to the adjacent spaces.  Additional programming of the area would continue to bring communities together (ie. movie nights on the open green, etc).
